Kitchen Chimney Buying Guide: Size, Suction and the Right Type for Indian Cooking

Quick Answer: Choose a chimney that is at least as wide as your hob, with enough suction for the way you cook. Heavy frying and tadka need stronger suction than light boiling. Pick a type that suits your layout: wall mounted for wall hobs, island type for island hobs. Plan the duct route before the kitchen is made, because the chimney, the cabinets and the wall all depend on each other.

Key Facts:

  • The chimney should cover the hob fully. A common rule is to match or exceed the hob width.

  • Suction is quoted in cubic metres per hour. Heavy Indian cooking needs more than light cooking.

  • A shorter, straighter duct with fewer bends works better than a long, twisting one.

  • Chimney filters need regular cleaning. The type of filter decides how often and how hard.

Do you need a chimney at all?

For Indian cooking, usually yes. Frying, tadka and tandoor style cooking release oil and smoke that settle on cabinets, walls and ceilings. Without extraction, you get sticky film on shutters and a smell that lingers. A chimney carries most of that outside.

What size chimney should you buy?

Measure your hob first. The chimney should be at least as wide, so it catches the smoke that rises past the edges. Many homes use a chimney that matches a standard hob width, but the right size is the one that covers your hob fully.

Height matters too. The bottom of the chimney should sit at a comfortable distance above the hob, and the manufacturer's manual will say how far. Too low and you bump your head. Too high and the smoke escapes around it.

How much suction do you need?

Suction is the volume of air the chimney moves each hour. Look for the cubic metres per hour figure on the product. As a guide:

  • Light cooking (boiling, steaming, little frying): lower suction is enough.

  • Regular Indian cooking (daily tadka, shallow frying): medium to high suction.

  • Heavy frying, large families, open kitchens: higher suction, because the smoke spreads further.

A bigger kitchen, a longer duct or more bends all call for more suction. Ask the seller to match the figure to your kitchen, not just to the hob.

Which type of chimney suits your kitchen?

  • Wall mounted: sits on the wall above a wall hob. The most common choice.

  • Island: hangs from the ceiling above an island hob. Needs a strong duct path through the ceiling.

  • Built in: fits inside a cabinet above the hob and is hidden when not in use.

  • Ductless (recirculating): filters the air and sends it back into the room. It does not remove heat or moisture, so many Indian kitchens prefer a ducted model.

What about filters?

Baffle filters have metal channels that trap oil as air passes through. They are sturdy and can be washed. Mesh filters trap oil in a fine metal net and need more frequent cleaning. Auto clean models collect oil in a tray. Whichever you choose, plan to clean it on a schedule, because a clogged filter loses suction.

How to plan the kitchen around the chimney

  1. Choose the hob position before the chimney.

  2. Check the duct route. It should go to an outside wall with as few bends as possible.

  3. Leave a clear wall for the chimney body. Wall cabinets beside it should not crowd the sides.

  4. Plan the power point in a spot that the chimney body will hide.

  5. Tell your designer the model early, so the cabinets above and beside it are made to fit.

Frequently asked questions

Can a chimney be installed after the kitchen is made?

Yes, but the cabinets may need changes. It is easier to plan the chimney first.

Is a bigger chimney always better?

Not necessarily. It needs to match your hob and your duct. An oversized chimney can look heavy and may not fit your wall cabinets.

How often should the filter be cleaned?

Follow the maker's advice. For heavy daily frying, that can be every few weeks.
